Well, I am a gamer, not some crazy-ass fanboy or hardcore, just a gamer, but I do have my likes. One of the games I really enjoyed playing was "Freelancer" from Microsoft. Very decent third person perspective spaceshooter, I really do recommend playing. But as time goes by certain technologies become obsolete, certain things work differently then they used to and "Freelancer" sadly is just another case of that.
Now, don't get me wrong, the game should play fine on just about any "current" computer, but there might be a little problem with sound. Well, "little" is a bit of an understatement, if you happen to be one of the people affected, it's possible that you won't hear music, voices, if you're lucky, it will be limited just to some of the stuff said. The game will be still playable, but you won't be able to experience the story properly and the in-game fights will be empty without the banter of the pilots.
That is cause by an audio codec, the name escapes me at the moment, but if you do have sound problems in this game, it is related to exactly that codec. If you, like me, do a little google search, you will find post that are trying to find the solution. Some people will say "Oh, just uninstall your codec and reinstall" or something like that, but let me tell you something - from experience - this does not help on Vista, or at least didn't work for me. Luckily there is a solution and a very simple one.
In the attached archive you will find 3 files: The proper codec file, a command program that will help you implement it and an instruction, written by me, on how to work everything out. And don't worry, I didn't throw some technological babble, it is written in a language any person with basic computer knowledge can understand. And more importantly, this solution doesn't require you to uninstall anything, install anything, restart your computer, can be done in literally couple clicks and simply put, works. Do yourself a favor, fix your system, if it needs that, so you can play this game.
The Windows Vista Freelancer Sound Problem Working Fix (I heard it also works in Windows 7, but I cannot guarantee that, as I don't own one myself): https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-6Ap17neh-HMFlwRDZHZlFwLUU/edit?usp=sharing
